  •  Yes, indeed (23+ / 0-)

I have had au pairs from several Latin American countries and some look "full" European, while others look as if they have Native American ancestry -- and their skin color exhibits the same variety of ancestorship.

One is now a PhD physicist.  They all had university degrees.

Richwine has no idea of what he is talking about.  As the granddaughter of other immigrants who were often relegated to the "low IQ forever" bucket of the day, it just mystifies and angers me that ANYONE still believes that there are significant differences in human potential based on a nebulous and ever changing construct that is called "race."

    •  Above all, "racism" (15+ / 0-)

is a convenient way to dress up class bias. That's the real bugbear.

It's here they got the range/ and the machinery for change/ and it's here they got the spiritual thirst. --Leonard Cohen

      •  And it accomplishes a lot doesn't it? (6+ / 0-)

If  you drive home the point long enough that all poor people are minorities, and those slutty single mothers, and that all minorities and single mothers are poor. No poor white people will want to think of themselves as being poor and it will be that much easier to vote for policies that hurt the poor and themselves.

The only person that I ever knew who really fit their image of a welfare queen was white. Seven kids by seven different fathers. Never worked a day in her life, terrible parent, often drunk and smoking weed, dangerous pet dog that knocked her kid down and broke his arm and bit a man walking down the street near their home, little kids allowed to play on the roof of a two story house and stay up all hours of the day and night. She even claimed that the state of California paid her to move to Oregon. I would not blame them. I moved away from her first chance I got.

But what have we all been trained to think about when we hear the phrase welfare queen. A black women in the inner city. Not a white lady in a fairly small town.

That passed by; this can, too. - Deor

    •  The most offensive thing about Richwine's thesis (2+ / 0-)

is that he accepts the definitions of the "populations" he's comparing without making any effort to ensure that those populations are homogeneous in a way that makes comparing them at all meaningful. There's that and the big, broadbrush statement he makes at the very beginning (at least of his abstract) about the meaningfulness of IQ.

And then there's the little matter of his committee buying off on his bullshit. For that they ought to lose their jobs.
