    (like contraception) where lay Catholics simply ignore the Vatican hierarchy's positions. There's either no or negative correlation between the percentage of a region's population that are Catholic and the amount of influence the hierarchy has in politics. In much of South America, the hierarchy is resented for its former support of repressive regimes (that's also true of Spain and Portugal).

    It's a common fallacy to attribute the attitudes of a group's leadership to all the group's members. For example, the average NRA member wants guns to be far more regulated than the NRA's board does. Reagan was famous for, during his campaigns, inflating his favorables by treating endorsements by, say, a county's Farm Bureau as if they were endorsements by every single member. How many people here hold the same position on filibusters as Harry Reid does?

    Sometimes truth is spoken from privilege and falsehood is spoken to power. Good intentions aren't enough.
