    town NW of San Antonio named Boerne, pronounced 'Burnee', the Wiki explains the derivation of the name.

    renamed it in honor of German author Karl Ludwig Börne,[9][10] with the Anglicized spelling of Boerne.
    Settled by liberal German (mostly) Free Thinkers in the 1840's Hill Country area, it is now a hotbed of RW 'bagger types that continually sends US Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Sceyence&TeqNo, TX-21), back to Congress with 60-80% margins.

      I'm okay with the "Burn" first syllable. The "EE" second syllable is just flat wrong. It's also a very common "we don't speak German" pronounciation of a German name. "Burn-a" would be much better, but.....

        nearby village of Gruene, which is pronounced simply as Green, not Greenee. Many Texas place name pronounciations are 'bent' around (esp. Spanish ones), I have a theory best left aside.

          Yeah, I've been to Bourne, Gruene, Luckenbach, San Marcos and a bunch of other little places around that part of the Hill Country back in the early ''80s in my river running days.  There was a place in Gruene right there by where River Road crosses over the Guadalupe.  That place made the best chicken fried steak that I've ever put in my mouth.  That aside, I wonder how many would guess how the locals pronounce Mexia.  ;-}
