  •  Just because "native speakers" believe that (0+ / 0-)

"under siege" means "under attack" doesn't make it correct.

Just like the constant spelling of moron as "moran" and the flame/falme the/teh intentional usages don't really change the correct spelling.

    But thanks for the lecture.

    •  Actually ... (0+ / 0-)

.... to me as a linguist, the usage and intuitions of native speakers are pretty much the only evidence I can really use.  I study language scientifically.  If I reject something purely because some higher authority tells me that a usage is "wrong", I am essentially excluding data for arbitrary reasons.

A language is the way it is because of the rules that are agreed-upon among the speaker community, not because of some arbitrary and immutable fact.  As far as the spelling changes you mention -- they could change.  Virtually every aspect of a language can and does change over time.

Indeed, while "moran" is pretty much wholly an error (and a pretty big one, "teh" is so common that I'd almost say that in an informal, online conversation it's practically standard.  That's hard to say for certain though -- since it still carries a pretty heavy ironic tone to it.
