    and a long stream of social thinkers, researchers, and theorists have discussed it at length since the mid-19th century.

    All the way back at Marx, it was understood that capitalism is the most powerful thing that humans have ever invented, and also the most potentially destructive, precisely because it is driven by and drives an unreasoned and asocial aggregate of individual interests that sustain it, rather than the more ephemeral quantities—albeit more desirable and rational ones, for species survival and fulfillment—of collective will and humanistic values.
