    progressive, they garner support simply for themselves. All the people you mentioned who like the candidate for themselves - a positive force - are fairly indisputably progressive / liberal / take the working folks' side of things.

    But a compromise candidate, or one who has middle-ground positions (or some left, some center, etc), may need a villain to solidify support.  [I'm starting to wonder how bad some of the villains are in some of the cases, after seeing what some of the compromise candidates propose later....]

    Or at least that's the extrapolation I drew from your response. ;-)
