remember in the early days, we used to go to NY Times and WA Post for most of the stories

and the pundits were discussed a lot

these days, they are out of it

here is and the formal legal counsel for NY times during Pentagon Papers saying that Obama is number 2 of the worst attacks on free speech after Nixon. And if Obama is successful in prosecuting Assange, he will become number 1.

JAMES GOODALE: Well, more precisely, I say that if in fact he goes ahead and prosecutes Julian Assange, he will pass Nixon. He’s close to Nixon now. The AP example is a good example of something that Obama has done but Nixon never did. So I have him presently in second place, behind Nixon and ahead of Bush II. And he’s moving up fast. And if he goes ahead against Assange, he’ll at least be even, and we’ll have to see how that prosecution, if it takes place, comes out, because maybe he’ll pass him.

bothers me.  The others are tempests in a teapot.

Last night Chris Hayes listed the top stories AP has done recently and asked how many sources today would be willing to open up to an AP reporter.  Or perhaps any reporter.  Between the consolidation of the press under ownership by corporatists and the chilling effect of this administration's ruthless pursuit of whistleblowers, it's no wonder we don't get the media coverage we'd hope for on controversial issues.
