    is that the Republicans routinely present the nation with something or someone incomprehensibly horrible, for which they are rightly pilloried with fairly extreme rhetoric.

    Then, beginning in the next election cycle, they determinedly apply that same rhetoric to whomever and whatever the Democrats present to the nation.

    George W. Bush may very well have been the Worst. President. Ever. Nobody who actually knows anything about American history seems to doubt that he's somewhere in the "top" three. But now ... the wingnuts are calling Obama the WPE. It's ludicrous.

    People here tend to classify this behavior as "Projection", but I'm not sure that's it -- I think in many cases, it's just mindless imitation. I doubt if many of them even realize that they are aping the rhetoric of their own critics -- they've neither the necessary memory nor the necessary capacity for self-reflection.

    To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
