    This is a death spiral that was manufactured to come in the form of billions of paper cuts, so to speak.

    In the 90s most postal markets had a 90-98% overnight delivery of first class mail within a metro area.  Two days was the standard for most mail delivered from city to city.  Those rates have fallen dramatically as far as I can tell and that's because there are fewer people and resources to move the mail than there once were. That alone hurts business.  But there's much more to it than that that threaten the organization.
