  •  Seattle has something like that too, (8+ / 0-)

Difference in age. I knew a guy who was a cop. He arrested a 30-year-old man who was having sex (in a park) with a 17-year-old girl. He told me that if they were within two or three years, it wouldn't be a felony. And if you think about it, if one person is one day older than 18 and the other is one day younger than 18, it's not an adult and a child.

by some states bizarre rules (not WA apparently) that don't account for the gap in age. She was 18 before her boyfriend was by a few wks.
oops also has to do with how they define sex. Some states it's only any sort of "penetration" of the body (oral anal sex). So maybe she would have slipped through since she was not the one doing the penetrating.

If I had teenagers I'd scrutinze the law and warn them and all of their friends and their friends parents.

Q: Even if the sexual contact was consensual, why wasn’t the UW basketball player charged with child rape? Isn’t the age of consent 18?

A: No. Under Washington State law, a 16-year-old is legally capable of consenting to having sexual contact.

I'm guessing the arrest was for the public indecency of having sex in a park.

    •  If it was recent, it was legal... (0+ / 0-)

...since the age of consent in Washington is 16.

In Oregon, there's a three-year limit; if one partner is less than three years older than the other, it's legal, even if the younger partner is under 18 (the age of consent in Oregon).

9-11 changed everything? Well, Katrina changed it back.
