  •  Would it be considered a Humanist denomination? (3+ / 0-)
    5. Humanistic Judaism:
Humanistic Judaism, founded in 1963 in Detroit, Michigan by Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine, offers a nontheistic alternative in contemporary Jewish life. Humanistic Jews believe in creating a meaningful Jewish lifestyle free from supernatural authority, in achieving dignity and self-esteem, and in reviving the secular roots of Judaism. Humanistic Judaism embraces a human-centered philosophy that combines the celebration of Jewish culture and identity with adherence to humanistic values.

that would be tolerant as well. And Reconstructionism supports a "naturalistic" theology, and I would think most of them would have the same tolerance. Most synagogues I've been to of all the major streams tolerate having non-believers among them, even if they espouse some form of theism. I didn't feel that the Conservative congregations I used to belong to were intolerant of those who didn't believe, and many members were in fact atheist or agnostic. I personally eventually didn't feel comfortable participating, and still don't, so I stay away. but not because I was treated with intolerance.

with my wife being jewish...my kid is taking hebrew classes...and me joining with the community and their celebrations...I see no reason for them to be anything but kind...the rabbi asked when we joined if I would be converting...I said no thank you...and we moved on.

mostly it's not a big thing to me...I'm willing to discuss with people...but always try to be considerate...I'm not going to change anybody's mind...or they mine.
