Let's summarize and review your argument:

Progressives should not just "hold their nose" and vote for McAuliffe, they should be actively and enthusiastically supporting his candidacy without delay,

    BECAUSE:

    - His opponents are really bad dudes

    - He's really good at raising corporate money

    - Even though he has a record of right-wing views, the last two democratic govs of Virginia have been less right-wing than the one before, so therefore we can assume that McAuliffe won't be as right-wing as we would otherwise expect.

    - Oh, and did I already mention he is really good at raising corporate money?

    - Some people dislike him because he smiles too much, and that is a stupid reason to dislike him.

    THEREFORE:  Get exited!

ARE YOU SERIOUS?! Those are the reasons I should be ENTHUSIASTIC and EXITED about the candidacy of the guy who was at the center of the movement to turn the democratic party into shills for finance and big business?   (A trend which, in my opinion, did more to further the spread and power of radical right wing ideas than anything else).

But THIS has to be the most unintentionally hilarious of all:

Folks on the left tend not to be comfortable with the big money fundraiser/schmoozer types, for obvious reasons -- because the Republican party has been taken over by such types in order to advance corporate interests.
No, my friend.  Us folk on the left are uncomfortable with big money corporate shills like McAuliffe because THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY has been taken over by such types in order to advance corporate interests - and McAuliffe personally played a big role in helping that happen!

If you want to make the argument that progressives should hold their nose and vote for McAuliffe, go ahead.  You would probably be right.  But to ask progressives to be enthusiastic about it, that HAS to be a cruel joke.

We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both. - Former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis
