  •  Do you know anything about Gap Inc's CSR policies? (0+ / 0-)

    @gramofsam1:

    I think Gap is shooting itself in the foot on this, but let's look at facts.

    1. Gap was not involved in the factory that collapsed.
    2. They have some of the most progressive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies in the industry.
    3. Many progressive people in the Bay Area work at Gap HQ. Jobs in the CSR dept. are highly coveted and people who work there take great pride in the continuing improvement of Gap's policies.

    Several years ago I did a lot of work for a contractor at Gap HQ.  They are far from perfect, but IMO they rate pretty high in the corporate world.

    I'm not offering a blanket defense of Gap Inc. or its policies and practices. I only suggest that they should be judged against their competitors on real criteria, not guilt by association.

    Gap is not Wal-Mart.

    I disagree strongly with how they are responding to this; I think they're making huge mistakes and leaving themselves open to deserved criticism.

    But before you condemn them, at least take the time to educate yourself about how they rate against other merchants who produce goods overseas. Unless you only purchase products made in the USA by union workers (and I say this as a dues-paying Teamster), then you are likely as much a part of the problem as most of us.

    The problem begins with our laws that allow tariff-free imported goods from countries whose environmental and employment protections are far less than our own. Where I think Gap brands are at least above-average for their cohort (and possibly top-tier) is in their effort to enforce standards on their overseas contractors and improve conditions for workers.

    Yes, they're screwing the pooch on this one.  But don't make them the poster child for evil when they weren't even involved in this tragedy.

    (That sound you are hearing is a paradigm being shifted at Warp Factor Infinity using no clutch.)
