  •  Middle of the night tornados are the worst (12+ / 0-)

Florida is weird in that there's no real pattern as to when we get tornados.  Most of the more recent big ones seem to have been in the winter.  Quite a few have hit in the middle of the night.

There was an F3 that hit about 20 or so miles from me on Groundhog's Day (2/2/2007) at around 3-4 AM EST and went through the town of Paisley and gradually slowed to an F2 and then F1 through DeLand and New Smyrna.  Due to the tornado striking in the middle of the night almost everyone was sleeping and several mobile home parks were leveled, killing 21 and injuring 76 with few people aware of what was coming.  We don't have any tornado sirens that I'm aware of in Florida so unless you have a weather radio you won't get any warning if one strikes late night.
