    They can happen at any time, but Great Plains tornadoes have this reputation of being "polite", in that they usually take place after noon and before people go to bed.  Of course, there are probably exceptions...

    East of the Mississippi, they take place between noon and dawn the next day.  They also like to wrap themselves in precipitation so you can't tell where they are.  (The Moore tornado did that briefly while it was at its worst.)
