I hesitate to pass judgement on anyone who takes his or her own life, understanding as I do that most folks who've never been confronted with a decision like that probably don't have the requisite context to do anything more than make superficial interpretations, and while suicides can be any numbers of things, superficial isn't one of them.

If this was an attempt to take one's life in protest, then I'm reminded of the Buddhist monks during the Vietnam War who showed so much more dignity and depth of symbolism with their acts of self-immolation as a form of protest.

This act presents a great many contradictory dimensions and doesn't seem to work in quite the same way at all.
