    cicada summers I have experienced.

Now, preparing for my fourth experience of the loudest noise in the insect world, the cicada love song. We call it a noise. But, to the cicada it is an announcement and invitation by the male cicada it's ready to mate.

When hundreds of thousands of cicada emerge in a given area, the love song is so overwhelmingly loud, the birds that would feed on the cicada are frightened away.  Both a mating call and a protective defense mechanism the cicada love song
helps to enable and prolong the ever so short few days of the above ground cicada life cycle.
