    Partly for its message re drug addiction and the failings of our society (especially the ways it has failed Native Americans), but mostly for the beauty and poetry of Maté's writing. It has led me to long musings on great English writing by people for whom English is a second (third, fourth) language. They seem to avoid clichés and approach words in an entirely new way.

    I'm thinking at this moment of Arundhati Roy and The God of Small Things.

      as you can see by my sig line I am a fan of Arundhati Roy as well...working with HIV positive inmates for the past number of years and seeing the consequences of horrific abuse many suffered as children and resulting addictions and ultimately prison, Mate struck such a chord with me
