  •  This brings up a point I've been making (2+ / 0-)

as an older, straight woman for some little while-- though rarely here at TGOS.

I use the term "Marriage Equality" because that is what we're fighting for...equality under the law, no matter whom you marry.  Once the battle has been fought and won, we can call it gay marriage, sexy-hanging-from-the-lights marriage, or--my personal preference--marriage.

Until then, we do need to frame it so that people whom we want to vote with us don't get bogged down in terminology or distracted by the other side's fixation on icky gay sex.

We could point out, though, that all the icky gay sex is pretty much the same as icky straight sex, except where certain bits go at certain times. :-)

The other point I've been making of late is the use of the word "gender" rather than "sex" when talking about some issues.  The second we say "sex" we change the topic, subtly, but surely.  "Gender", however, is less fraught with loaded meaning for many people.

Thanks, Dave, as always for a thoughtful diary.

n.b. I do realise that most of the people here are fine with whatever  terminology is used (within reason) and I'm sure we're all voting on the same side.  My concerns about terminology are for those who aren't as at ease with our slang, outrageously sly humour, or just not (yet) as comfortable as they will someday be.

We cannot call ourselves a civilised society if we refuse to protect the weakest among us.
