    •  Were Cruz's parents American citizens? (1+ / 0-)

If so, I don't see why that should matter.  McCain was born in Panama, the military hospital being outside of the Canal Zone.  According to Wikipedia, Cruz's dad was from Cuba, but had he become a citizen?

      •  According to Wikipedia, Cruz's father (3+ / 0-)

became a citizen in 2005. His mother, however, was from Delaware, so her citizenship transferred directly to her son, making him a US citizen from birth. Apparently  he is also eligible for Canadian citizenship, particularly if his parents had "permanent resident" status in Canada at the time of his birth. I assume they would have had that status, since they both worked for the oil industry there for four years.

          as to what "native-born" means.

if the definition you cite were widely accepted, then Stanley Ann Dunham's US citizenship would have been enough to shut up the haters with ODS

      •  Cruz' mother is US born native, Irish-American (0+ / 0-)

from Delaware. And McCain's parents were both American native-born citizens.

That's all it takes, one American citizen parent. Think about all the kids born at overseas military postings. Including the ones with local-girl mothers (British, German, Japanese, Korean, ETC.!)

one in China, one in Japan.
My husband and I are both U.S. citizens, but to get a "Report of Birth of U.S. Citizen Born Abroad" certificate we had to register them with the U.S. embassies in those places, and also attest to our citizenship (place of birth, length of time we'd lived in the U.S., etc., in addition to producing our passports).
This was 30+ years ago, so I'd guess the same rules applied to Cruz's birth in Canada.
I'd like to see Cruz's "Report of U.S. Citizen Born Abroad" papers, just to make sure everything's above board.....
          Show us the proof, Ted.

Obama was actually born in the US to a US citizen and the birthers have been howling ever since he was a candidate.  Of course their standards are about as dubious as Cruz's,
