    I think the Republicans would love to use LGBT people as a scapegoat to kill any immigration bill.
    They're going to risk offending the increasingly important Latino electorate just so they can please a few bigots in their party who will vote for them anyway?  I doubt it seriously.  The Republicans are the ones who need this bill to pass.  They have no credibility on this issue, and if the bill fails over the UAFA, the GOP will be blamed, not the Democrats.

    The Republicans aren't stupid.  They can see the demographic tidal wave they're facing.  That should give the Democrats a great deal of leverage.  As usual, though, the Democrats don't want to use it.

      by scapegoating LGBTs.  That is, Repubs kill the bill on account of Leahy's amendment (had it passed), and then campaign for Latino votes by blaming LGBTs for the death of the bill.  I doubt that strategy would have worked, but maybe that's what the GOP had planned.
