are those pushing the buttons of potential madmen... there are people who only need a push to give into their inner dark passengers (h/t Dexter).

there are time when one must put events into context and as more and more of these things happen, and we concentrate only on micro rather than the macrocosm, then we miss the why and perhaps the way to mitigate the rage.

uncertainty and a perception of the world out of control (which I'm sure I would feel living in anywhere in the middle east right now) is more than enough pressure to push the inner dark passengers and is also enough to push good people to defend their own existence.

i can't image how hard it must be to be an Arab walking in daylight in the western world... wondering who among the strangers i'm passing hates me, my beliefs, my children... who wises they could just blow us all out of existence... even though all I want is a job, a home, a life for my kids.

and that's how some of the non Arab posters feel in this thread, it seems to me. THREATENED by something they don't fully understand and believing something spoon fed them in order to control them.

    •  Being East Asian in appearance was like that for (0+ / 0-)

… some decades after the end of World War II, even if you were born and bred in the West.

i can't image how hard it must be to be an Arab walking in daylight in the western world… wondering who among the strangers i'm passing hates me, my beliefs, my children… who wishes they could just blow us all out of existence… even though all I want is a job, a home, a life for my kids.
As an Asian-looking person you always had to reckon that some people were automatically going to distrust you and even insult you to your face, because Pearl Harbor / Bataan death march / Korean War / Vietnam War / "taking our jobs" / "stealing our technology," blah blah.

Someone you just met might suddenly bring up Hiroshima* or something, and imply that "you" had it coming, blah blah. (*Never mind that your American family's roots were actually Korean or Chinese or SE Asian.)

You quickly came to realize that Asians really do "all look alike" to them. On some level they perceived your very existence among them as part of a vast, monolithic threat.

They or their forefathers had fought "your" people "over there" so as not to have to see "your" people living here — yet, here you were.

The Dutch kids' chorus Kinderen voor Kinderen wishes all the world's children freedom from hunger, ignorance, and war.
