    I think the error in the "Reagan wouldn't fit in" line of thought is fourth-dimensional.

    Reagan actually supported gun control measures that were being considered at the time and could pass (e.g. the Brady Bill, the Assault Weapons Ban). At least once he left office, that is.

    While in office, however, he was pretty tightly held on the NRA's leash (as well as almost every other right-wing orthodoxy group).

    Once he knew he wouldn't ever be a candidate again, he lobbied President Bush Sr. for the Brady Bill, and joined with Presidents Carter and Ford to endorse the Assault Weapons Ban. But while he was in his prime, he would have said what he had to in order to be crowned King of the Tea Party (without any sense of irony).

    It was only when he wasn't manipulatively trying to score votes that he became unacceptable for the modern right-wing zealots.

    But then, he left office when I was seven, so what do I know?

      and he couldn't utter a word about maybe that shouldn't be ok until he was out of office (and in advanced dementia).
