And a lot of EUReKA involved moments of comedy - but I'm not sure what you mean by serious.

I found that time after time the show would pursue some idea and do it fairly consistently. Granted there were always some details that might get glossed over, a certain amount of babble-speak, but on the whole I think they did a pretty good job of creating a world about a community of top-flight people doing cutting edge research. (I've worked with a number of dedicated research types, and some of them would have fit right in EUReKA.)

I especially enjoyed it when they would throw in little details that showed someone had really done their research. I also enjoyed the way the main characters they created came to have a great deal of depth.

I'm willing to call EUReKA serious in that they were serious about executing it well, week after week. Production values, acting, story lines - some episodes were better than others, but I think they managed to beat Sturgeon's Law more than once.

    •  I mean it was never wonder-porn. (0+ / 0-)

Science and technology were grist for goofiness.  It's a good show and fun entertainment, but it was never designed to inspire anyone.

They weren't blatant about it, but there were some implicit messages there.
