    Unfortunately, this is a common experience...especially for gay men. For all the talk by the gay community about acceptance and diversity, we are just a susceptible to the racism, sexism, ableism and classism that infects the rest of society. Just take a look at personal ads, where terms such as 'no fems', 'no fats' and 'disease-free' abound.

    That being said, I'm of the mind that we make our own communities by choice, and we can seek out friends that differ from the stereotypical 'gay community' of white, muscle-bound circuit-queens. I've found success making gay friends volunteering, joining gay clubs (music groups and althletics are good choices), and found good friends who are in recovery, since their life doesn't revolve around the bars & partying. YMMV of course, depending on where you live, and in some places the bars are the only options to meet other gay people. However, if you make an effort to seek out like-minded individuals it can pay off.
