    It's good to have someone raise the unanswered questions, and these seem quite important to me.

    There's also an excellent article there about things we can do to protect ourselves:

    It includes links to the Electronic Frontier Foundation's HTTPS Everywhere, which keeps most of our browsing out of view, and Dukgo.com, which has a safer search engine, DuckDuckgo.com. I've been using those quite a while, and haven't had any problems. YMMV.

    It also links to riseup.net, something I haven't used and perhaps don't need to. A snip:
