  •  Everyone has abandoned their dreams (7+ / 0-)

which is part of the reason I think we're in such a mess.  What do we, as a nation, strive for?  What do we have to look forward to?  What are our goals?

A national project like landing on the moon couldn't be attempted today.  Heck, I think building the interstate highway system today would be impossible.  We've gone from dreaming big dreams of a bright future to retreating within our own little worlds, content to hang on tight to what's ours, afraid that someone waits in the shadows to take it from us.  We need to dream again, but how to do so in an environment where we are so divided?

The diarist is right... pragmatism is useful and essential, because dreamers need to be doers, and our gray world has little place for the black and white of idealistic solutions.  We dream of the flower, but we need to do the hard work of selecting the spot, tilling the soil, planting the seed, watering, weeding, and nurturing it as it grows.
