    Most of it is a joke, though perhaps an inside joke.

    For instance, the neighbors fight about taking out blackberry bushes.  When the protagonist does what the neighbor wants, taking out the omnipresent blackberries, the hillside slips down into the neighbor's kitchen.  

    Our neighbor in Oregon cut down brush, even though my husband advised that a slide would occur if they did, and lo, it happened last winter.  The slide resulted in a huge drop in our property values.

    Then too, in Seattle, you either have to jockey for a good public school or submit your child to an admissions process as depicted in the book (which is ridiculous).  Nobody I know sends their child to boarding school.  I did have kids on tour at my museum who attended the private school Gates went to, and they were exceptionally bright.
