I imagine that writers must be at least dissatisfied with reality and so desire an escape into another universe that they are forced to create.
Tennessee seemed to be trying to understand himself and his family and to get it down on paper.

    I liked Cryptonomicon.

reality? Or am I just revealing myself as a writer? But couldn't you make the argument that (fiction) readers must be dissatisfied with reality, too? I think you might read or write not necessarily because you're dissatisfied with reality, but because writing or reading enriches your life in some way.

usually more ordered, more insightful - and you can choose which parts of reality you love (travel, romance, adventure, science, weirdness, laughter, etc.) and get concentrated doses of them.

Like any mind-altering substance, it's okay as an icing, dangerous when you make it the whole cake of life. As a reader. As a writer, if you can make a living out of exciting escapes and colorful creation, you'd be a fool not to.

          The Glass Menagerie?

          I am really curious.

the Tennessee Williams I know, but I know far too little. I saw one scene from The Glass Menagerie, back in college, in my acting group.

So really all I know are the movies of A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and The Night of the Iguana. Which are all 5-star movies. I really need to read more of him.
