  •  The dude on the motorcycle (10+ / 0-)

is an a$$hole, and his opinion is worth nothing.  I think it's sweet, democratic, and decent of you to be so civil... it reflects well on you as a human being.

But the dude on the motorcycle is running scared of all sorts of things. He's a white conservative in Southern California who listens to Faux News - and therefore fully understands that he's on the path to irrelevance a decade or so before that realization dawns on all the other a$$holes just like him in less progressive parts of the nation.  He's scared shitless of being a minority, of black people and Latinos, of change in general. He's poor and uneducated and he's clinginging as hard as he can to the myth that he has value because he's an American and reflects the true America.  He's insecure about his nation, his job, his future. He responds to this fear by bullying others.

He's never going to achieve anything of note, and the knowledge that he's a loser grates at him. He has the basic value inherent to all human beings, but precious little else to show for his existence here on the planet.

I grew up in So Cal and I know a$$holes like him all too well.  The way to engage folks like him is to defeat them at the ballot box, make sure there's a safety net to keep them from suffering, and solidify the sort of long-term political change that renders his bullying, red faced a$$ irrelevant. You were right not to engage in a fight with him, but you need not feel as if he is worth much dignity.

I agree that directed hatred is not a pretty sight. The guy is angry as you can see.

However, the crap that is making him mad is near to the same stuff that we also talk of here. It seems to me that the diarist has hit on something: We're all in the same boat. If nothing else, it should strike fear in DC.
