When I was a mom with small kids around all the time, I often wished for a toy library too.  I know there are probably some issues with sanitation, since kids put stuff in their mouths, but toys could be cleaned before they got borrowed by the next family.

    •  Next best thing--consignment stores? (0+ / 0-)

As our daughter grew up, we made regular trips to the consignment stores, buying and consigning.

That sure made it a lot more affordable to stay current with age-appropriate toys, and we had an easy outlet for those things she outgrew.  It seems there's a lot of inventory turnover in those stores for some items; it can be hit-or-miss finding more desirable items.  Which improves the resale value on them.

We didn't have a ton of toys and what we had came from a thrift store. But, she separated them into two boxes and when I was getting hard to manage she would switch the boxes and I'd be all excited I was getting new toys! But we have a 10-month-old and we haven't bought really ANY toys so far and he has way more than he needs. They seem to come out of the woodwork so we don't spend our money on toys for him. Or clothes for that matter.
