    I remember January and February, there were two or three distinctively, bitterly cold days, but mostly a very mild winter. There was one day in January when it snowed a total of about half-an-inch, and then there was nothing else. Winter 2011-2012 was the least snowy for DC.

    Only a single day went below freezing in March, and we had a streak of mid 80s weather for a while then. The cherry blossoms were blooming at their earliest. We averaged 66 degrees for a high that month.

    Late June onward, it just all went berserk, and that derecho set the tone... I couldn't keep count either...

    It made very real sense to me that 2012 was about to be the hottest year on record for the US. It only needed to hold out a few more months to receive its sordid prize.
