  •  Don't forget Woodrow Wilson's abuses. (5+ / 0-)

With FDR, generally the Japanese internment is the only thing people can point to.

Woodrow Wilson was so awful in terms of national security abuses that the ACLU was founded to oppose him.  He's the one who wrote the unconstitutional Espionage Act of 1917, currently being used by Barack Obama to harrass whistleblowers.

Wilson used it to imprison Eugene Debs.  Documents which were declassified fairly recently prove that it really was him, and that his subordinates weren't "freelancing".  Of course, he declared those documents secret in order to maintain plausible deniability.

And the story spread about the "unjustified" sinking of the Lusitania was pretty much a case of "lying us into war" -- all the evidence since then indicates that the Lusitania was in fact engaged in weapons smuggling, just as the Germans said it was.

Now, there's a lot to like about Woodrow Wilson -- progressive income tax, votes for women, etc.  But never forget that he was the first architect of our most abusive "security state" garbage.
