    a bit of a primer on the topic

    Basically it doesn't erode/destroy ozone, what it does is very similar to carbon dioxide in that it traps heat from radiating back into space, thereby contributing to "global warming"

    The kicker is that it does so 20x more efficiently than carbon dioxide.

    Therefore - although (in the context of the generation of electricity) - it is only one half as bad as coal wrt carbon dioxide production, if only 5% of it "leaks" directly into the atmosphere somewheres during the extraction process - that 5% totally offsets the advantage.

    Of course, if more than 5% leaks, it is worse than coal.  Which seems to be the case based on NOAA data.
