but I think helping the Syrian rebels is the right thing to do.  My kids are still too young, but in a few years if they wanted to sign up, I would have no objection to them fighting in Syria.

    •  don't worry, in a few years (5+ / 0-)

      they can invade Iran

We're shocked by a naked nipple, but not by naked aggression.

    •  I appreciate your humanitarian motive -- (0+ / 0-)

honestly, I do -- but do you not see that virtually all the conflicts in which the United States has involved itself in the past fifty years began with similar intentions?

"Saving X country's exploited and enslaved people" is the original good intention that paves the road to Hell.  How many times do you need to see this object lesson demonstrated?

so far past the original diary posting you can't rec the comments anymore.

If you read this, please know that I would rec your comment a thousand times if I could.  Your observation is absolutely spot-on.

I will be 52 years old this year and as you said, every single damn "war" (declared and otherwise) that we have been involved in during my entire life has been presented to us as the last best hope to defend some poor underdog downtrodden people.

But that's NEVER the REAL reason.  Meanwhile, in countless areas around the globe, honest-to-god downtrodden people look to our country for leadership to rid themselves of persecutors and oppressors and exploiters.  And we sit by silent and turn away so we can claim "we didn't know" that was happening.

The main difference I see with Syria is that in the past our leaders gave us at least 5-10 years to collectively "forget" what they are doing.  This time we haven't even finished the last two conflicts.  As I said in my original comment above: ENOUGH!

        Metaphors be with you.
