Deregulation in the US hurts banking customers.

I'm a credit union customer, and when I am in my local area, I stick with my credit union's ATMs exclusively to avoid fees.

But when I'm outside the immediate area, I have long noticed that it is actually less expensive for me to use non-credit union ATMs in Italy than it is in the United States.  And no one can make a credible argument that it reflects the cost of providing the service, because I somehow doubt that an international ATM transaction is cheaper than a domestic one.

That's the difference that banking regulation makes.

And don't even get me started on telecom regulation and the result in terms of cost of telecom service in Rome versus any major US city.
