  •  The problem isn't direct deposit. (0+ / 0-)

The problem is the employees aren't getting to choose where it gets direct deposited.   They do this in Michigan with unemployment.   All the recipient has to do is use the card to make a one time withdrawal of their check and then put it wherever they want.  They will still pay a small fee for the 1x withdrawal, shouldn't have to I agree, but they aren't paying for its use as a debit card.

Nonetheless, your point is taken.   Corporate greed and disregard for people is at all all time high.

shouldn't have to.   However they can avoid accumulating fees by taking all of their money out when they get paid and putting it into another bank, credit union or under their mattress where they don't have to pay any additional fees for further and ongoing use.

It should not be treated as a bank account or a debit card.  It should be treated as a paycheck that they just paid to cash.    If they treat it as such and remove their money, they won't get nailed anywhere near as much.

These debit cards do not replace direct deposit, they replace physical checks/cash. Employees can still open a bank account at any bank and use direct deposit. The same is true of your Michigan example. Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency offers the choice of either a debit card or direct deposit into the account of your choosing.

The problem is for people that don't want to or can't use direct deposit for whatever reason
