  •  Comprehensive Immigration reform a bit narrow (1+ / 0-)

As an immigrant myself, I am all for a comprehensive immigration reform. What surprises me though is the fact that everyone is focused in illegal immigration. While this is of course an important issue and needs to be dealt with, who is looking into reforming legal immigration? Based on my own experience, I can tell you that it is a complete odyssey to immigrate legally. I was lucky enough to be in a category which has the "fastest" processing times, but even I had to go trough 4 years of bureaucracy, endless paperwork and jump all kinds of hoops to get a permanent resident card. 4 years of uncertainty while living, working and paying taxes in the US. Now that the first hurdle is taken, it will take me an additional 5+ years until I can apply for citizenship in order to be able to participate in the democratic process. (because for a permanent resident, voting is still not possible except on very few regional elections). Bottom line is, it will take me 9+ years to become a US citizen through legal immigration and I was lucky enough to be on the "fast track". Given this situation, I am not surprised that people try to enter the US illegally. Of course I don't expect Republicans to have enough oversight to even remotely tackle this issue, but strangely I also haven't heard Democrats addressing this part of the issue. Does immigration reform really mean focusing on illegal immigration only? Wouldn't it help a lot to reform legal immigration in order to avoid people taking the illegal route?
