I was born in the City, but grew up out on the Island -- no, not Staten Island, LONG Island. Maybe "out on the Island" is different from "on the Island"...

Anyway, it's been so long since I've lived anywhere near NYC (30 years), that I forgot some of the rules.
A recent trip back with my son led to a confused phone conversation with my mom (who grew up in Flatbush, raised us out on the Island, and now in her dotage lives in Florida).

    Phone call from Brooklyn B&B:

me: "Hi mom, we're in NY!"

    mom: "Where are you staying?"

    me: "In Flatbush."

mom: "I thought you were staying in the city!"

me: "We ARE in the city!"

mom: "You just said you were in Flatbush!"

Anyway, thanks for all the clarifications. :-)
