My grandfather, son of Polish-Jewish immigrants, was born in the Lower East Side in 1922. Through the Depression, his family moved more than 30 times, mostly in Manhattan, but finally, they settled down in the Bronx, though I don't recall which neighborhood. Before going to the Bronx (which was basically semi-suburban at the time), he lived for a while in Harlem. Finally, when my great-grandfather and my grandfather got some success from their deli, my grandfather moved to a detached house in Whitestone. Where he lived until the 1990s, when he retired and moved to Florida (typical, I know).
