    the whole idea of freeways, and many of them date back to a time when they hadn't figured out things like merge lanes. The Nimitz freeway through Oakland is a prime example: There are still a few entrances that have almost no run on at all. Entering or exiting it can be a heart-stopping experience. The elevated section of freeway through SF is another.
