Gandolfini had another very good, but understated, role in a film Quentin Tarantino wrote (but didn't direct): True Romance.  Gandolfini played the tough guy Virgil, a Chicago mobster sent after Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) to recover a stolen briefcase full of cocaine.  He wound up getting killed by Worley's wife Alabama (Patricia Arquette).  It's a good flick and perfectly in keeping with Gandolfini's later on-screen exploits.
