position, there's no effective competition and no choice for the electorate.
How are the voters supposed to know their participation is critical, if they're relegated to being rubber stamps?
Of course, if we're to have the people governing, then parties are anachronistic. So, it's not surprising that the Democratic party operatives are not keen on grass roots decision-making and grass roots candidates.
Truth is that the two major parties were quite happy to split the electorate between them, alternating rule by the disciplinarians with that of the "spoilers," all in the "national interest," of course, which, at bottom turned out to be the interests of the middlemen who finance campaigns and grease the wheels of commerce.
The extent to which the U.S. has been ruled by commercial interests has not been fully explored. We hardly consider that slavery was largely produced by shipping magnates reluctant to have their vessels transit the oceans empty. There were, after all, still plenty of natives who could have been hired to work. It wasn't necessary to exterminate them and import Africans, but it was part of the Dutch business model--the Dutch who, cannily, managed to accumulate all the gold Spain and Portugal stole from the Americas within a generation, hiding it in their vaults and issuing letters of credit instead. We overlook that the plantations were financed by European banks and that unfavorable commercial arrangements led them to frequently default and sell their workforce in bankruptcy proceedings. Perhaps the plantation "owners" were incompetent managers (Thomas Jefferson was doubtless an exception), but many seem to have been suckered into "making a new life" for themselves by people eager to get rid of them. "Up and out" is an old pattern. It's victims, like Willard, seem not to recognize that their promotion is undeserved.

We organize governments to deliver services and prevent abuse.
