is reviews of actual reporting done elsewhere.  Or just rehash (plus opinion) from elsewhere.

I don't think we're reporters so much as critics of reporters.

Maybe were opinion journalists, but it kinda takes more than having an opinion to actually reach the level of journalism.

Sometimes it's like a coffeeshop, but more often it's like a bar with a lot of people shouting at / not listening to each other.

but I do appreciate it is often more like a brawling bar here on occasion.

And for the record, I didn't say that the level of writing here is always up to the standard of the New Yorker or (pick some other well-written journal you like), it sometimes and commendably is, and mostly not. (The Daily Mail,  The New York Post, the National Enquirer, and other tabloids are also "newspapers") But that's part of its brand and I like it, so I come here.  And that's what Kos sells to advertisers.

Again, not sure why people are upset that I am saying that Kos runs a business and makes money on this for profit enterprise.  I agree with his values (or most of them) that's why I come here, just like I shop at the local store that supports left causes and hires diversely, re-funnels money back into the local economy, and carries foods and books and magazines I read.

There are responsible capitalists, and Kos is one of them.  I am not being snarky or ironic or critical, here, I happen to believe that responsible capitalism is not antithetical to my beliefs as a democratic socialist in the US.

Most of what makes it to the rec list is highly derivative.

But of what is written, a huge part is original work.

      Big difference.

      •  good point (0+ / 0-)

I find myself saddened frequently that insightful, original, and interesting diaries get a handful of responses and (maybe) a few recs.
