    but they were still highly chromatic, leading to wierd effects on colored items. (I have one that purports to be 2800K, and it's still a crappy light to read under -- the poor color spectrum makes it hard to focus.)

    LED lamps really are much better now. There's a color rendering index, which is rather different than a correlated color temperature (CCT, which is what the K number is). I can't cough up any evidence to prove it, but dollars to donuts this that has improved a lot. CRI is still not a good scale, but it's at least an attempt to measure an important quantity.
