... when you book a Convention, you commit to filling a certain number of rooms for the conference, and we're given a discounted rate for those rooms.  We need to make sure they're filled.

never been on that end and did not realize the rules. OTOH after those rooms get filled, perhaps locals can help out with additional suggestions. There is always the danger that people will change their registrations, I suppose.

The room rates for the hotels we had this time were perfectly reasonable for those of us in the upper middle class, which I guess includes most everyone who has the means to get to San Jose in the first place.

Was that question really from Karl Rove?

We all understand that freedom isn't free. What Romney and Ryan don't understand is that neither is opportunity. We have to invest in it.

The economics, basically, are that the Convention Center sets a price for the Convention that's supposed to be low enough to induce us to come so that we all will book lots of hotel rooms and spend money in restaurants, bars, etc.

FABULOUS convention. The rest is details. Just fabulous.

Back to money: On a 10-mins-away room Wed and Hilton Th-F-S, both shared with a roomie, on outdoor parking, meals, drinks alcoholic and not, a couple of meals, and about $35 in tips to everyone from food trucks to housekeepers, I spent about $450 on the ground in San Jose.

Obviously, the bulk of that - about $320 - was on the hotels. I brought breakfasts b/c it was cheaper, quicker, and more healthful*, and was pretty conservative for the most part, except for splurging on the hotel attached to the convention. I wonder if this is a pretty typical expense.

*plain yogurt, granola, and a banana. Perfectly delicious!
