to a vacant town council seat when I was teenager. He occupied the office for five years, running for election once & winning easily. Long active in the community & local Republican politics, he had only two matters on his agenda: He wanted a new ladder truck for the volunteer fire dept. & he wanted to ease out the current old chief & replace him with a younger, better trained man. He accomplished both. He had himself appointed Fire Commissioner (every council member was commissioner of something), studied fire engines & costs,  visited other fire depts, conferred with dept members, including Joe the Barber, a fireman & Democrat with his business across the street from the fire house, who drove the truck on most calls. Dad  was not a fireman, but he was a trained engineer who understood everything that went into a good hydraulic ladder fire truck.  That new fire truck was his baby, probably his proudest moment .

in your story. Have only one or to uncompromising goals. And to keep working on them. Mine is community owned municipal broadband.

Thank you for the wonderful story linking the fire truck with your dad supporting community.
