      Space opera is all about romanticism; it's a big reason why space opera is usually on the softer end of things.  They can't or don't want to show boring or unpleasant things; instead you get big fancy starships, swashbuckling heroes, edge-of-your-seat space battles, impossibly exotic destinations, triple-breasted cat girls, etc.

      Hard, realistic scifi would have a comparatively difficult time romanticizing space, especially if you want to show something we could actually do.  Scientists riding in a glorified RV for 18 months to go to a desert to do geology?  Think documentary rather than summer blockbuster.
