    Mainly because people inevitably misquote it or take it out of context.

    Strauss wasn't predicting that energy would be too cheap to meter, nuclear or otherwise, or that he ever expected to see it happen. That one statement was part of a larger list of items that he was saying was something to strive for, like someone today saying that in the future we should have ended hunger and poverty, cured cancer, the common cold, and ended racism.
