Your call for peeps to declare their independence from stuff comes at a very fortuitous time for me.  Just last night I decided to donate my truck to the local time bank which is just starting up here in Mid-Michigan.  I only use it once in a while for hauling manure and large items, otherwise it just sits there unused.  By donating it to the MMTB it is a much more effective use of resources for the community of which I'm becoming a much more active part of.  The two young-uns who have launched the MMTB are also getting together with other like-minded folks to create an eco-village outside of town, and if it gets off the ground they sure will be able to use that truck.  And it'll always be available for me to use on those occasions when I do need it.

Now I'm starting to look around at all the tools in my shop with a wicked gleam in my eye and contemplating donating all those to the MMTB for everyone to use, too.  It's quite an exciting and liberating feeling!

Independence, indeed!  If we hope to create a successful sustainable future it's going to have to incorporate collaborative consumption, and the beautiful thing is that you can start right in your own home, garage, and shop to help make it happen.

Thanks again for this call, Sir!
